I remember telling someone at a party many years ago, "I just do what makes me happy, and when it doesn't make me happy anymore, I change what I'm doing." (simple simple right?!) The woman I was speaking to, with more life experience than I, laughed and told me I had a lot to learn. I've never forgotten that conversation.
At the time, I felt stupid, naive, but also that I was right---it could be that simple.
Many changes and many life lessons and experiences later, I can laugh at the naivete of my 20 year old self, but also be reminded by her wisdom. Life is about transition and movement. When we are not growing and making changes, we get stuck and stiff.
I have changed my mind again and again about what serves me and what makes me feel joy. A party girl in my teens, a food obsessed vegan in my twenties, and now a balance of the two with a sprinkle of mama thrown in for playfulness and stability. Living a life that is fullfilling, but also staying aware that the next change may be right around the corner.
Transition can be difficult, but with it comes such rich beauty.
Commiting to a life with my partner, having a baby, moving again (and again and again), starting a business, growing a business, buying a house--these were all major transitions. Each offering a sense of renewal and opportunity for growth.
If you find you are on that brink--you are stepping off the platform into something BIG. It is so wonderful to go there with your best, clearest, healthiest, foot forward.
And you can start by saying:
I do what makes me feel joy, and when it doesn't make me feel joy anymore, I change what I'm doing
